Electrical Safety for Landlords

Get A Quote

In November 2017, the government proposed mandatory electrical checks for buy to let properties to improve safety standards for tenants nationwide. If the legislation passes, it will likely mean that landlords will need to conduct these electrical checks every five years, or at change of occupancy. This would align buy to let properties safety standards with those already in place for houses in multiple occupation which already require these tests.

Like anything, electrical installations will deteriorate with age and it is important to maintain your electrical systems properly to safeguard properties and tenants. By carrying out testing and inspection at regular intervals, we can determine a property’s electrical safety, and potential issues can be identified and dealt with, so problems don’t continue undetected which may eventually result in fire or injury.

We can offer an electrical installation condition report for just £120 (excluding VAT and HMOs). We can also quote for any remedial works or repairs too.

Kids Bedroom Lighting Ideas

Today we wanted to share some kids bedroom lighting ideas with you! Over the weekend I was speaking to a friend and she had no idea the range of options there are for kids bedroom lighting, she thought she was limited to a standard pendant with a light shade. While pendants are always a good standard option, there is just so much more that can be done to help create an amazing, bright, fun space that your children will love.

The graphic above shows a range of light fittings that can be installed. Whether your little one is into football, animals or everything pink, there is something for everyone with a wide range of budgets catered to.

Some more options for you to consider below:

kids bedroom lighting star

Starry Sky

Our personal favourite option is the “starry night” ceiling. Having all the benefits of LED lightbulbs coming together in a beautiful display that resembles a star filled night sky. This option is a perfect one to grow with your child. It makes a great feature of a nursery, but will still keep your childs interest as they grow up, and looks equally as good in an older child or teen (or even your own?!) bedroom.

kids bedroom lighting balloons

Balloons

Another great choice for your kids bedroom lighting are these fun balloons! There are so many different options with this lighting – you can choose a cluster of balloons as an over head light, or one as a nightlight. They are available as overhead light fittings or wall sconces, so you can really play around to make something fun, and as they’re so bright and colourful your whole family is sure to love them. A fun feature of these lights is that the string hanging from the balloons can actually be used to turn these lights on and off, so perfect for a little one who may not be able to reach a light switch yet!

kids bedroom lighting animals

Animals

These fun animal lights are always a popular choice. They’re available as a classic hanging three piece chandelier (as in the photo at the top of the post), or as in the middle option. They feature a monkey, giraffe and zebra and all three come as options in wall lights too.

kids bedroom lighting

Exposed bulb pendants

If you want something a bit more on trend, or for a more industrial look which may be more appealing to an older child, then these colourful hanging bulbs may be a great choice for your kids bedroom lighting. They come in a variety of colours and although these are hanging lights, the length can be adjusted so your kids can’t reach them or they won’t get in the way of adventurous play and the bulbs are LED lamps as well so won’t get as hot as an older style halogen light bulb.

Sunshine and Rainbows

The sunshine and rainbow decorative light fitting is probably more suited to a younger child but would add a fun, playful element to their bedroom.

The Moon

Or another of my favourites – a moon wall light. Simple and classic, and another option for your kids bedroom lighting that would work well in a nursery giving off a gentle, warm, soft glow for those night feeds, which would then work well as a nightlight for your toddler and then make a great feature in the room as your children grow up!

What do you think>

If any of these kids bedroom lighting ideas have got you thinking about what you could do in your kids bedroom, then please contact one of our friendly team for a chat to discuss your requirements. We would be happy to come out and give you a free, no obligation quote and talk through the options that would work well in your home, or help you to come up with a full lighting scheme, and we have options to suit all budgets. Also, if you have something in mind that isn’t shown here (this website is a great place to get ideas!), then chances are we can help you make that vision a reality too.

Electrical Safety Tips for Spring

Get A Quote

Now that Spring is officially here, and we’re all looking forward to (hopefully!) some nice weather just around the corner, we wanted to share with you some of our electrical safety tips for Spring!

  • If you have any outside sockets, give these a visual inspection to make sure there has been no water or otherwise damage to them over the winter.
  • Spring and Summer bring forth one of my least favourite jobs – gardening! All that grass to mow and hedges to trim! Before you start, check any power tools and appliances for frayed cords, broken plugs and cracked or broken housing. Repair or replace any damaged items.
  • One of the things we can probably count on about the British Spring is that we’ll more than likely get plenty of rain and showers! It goes without saying, but water and electricity do not mix! So avoid damp conditions when using electrical items, and store power tools out of damp or leaky sheds.
  • After the long, dark days of winter you might find that you have a few bulbs that need replacing in your light fittings. Now would be a great time to consider swapping your halogen bulbs to LED lamps! There are so many benefits to this; you can read our quick guide to LED lighting to find out more.

Always take care around anything electrical and if you’re in any doubt or unsure, then contact a professional!

Also, now is a great time to get your garden ready for Summer and barbeques and garden parties! Our next blog post will focus on how we can help your garden look amazing for summer!

Fixed Wire Testing – What and Why?

Get A Quote

Fixed wire testing is what we here at APR Electrical consider one of the most important aspects of electrical work. Like anything, electrical installations will deteriorate with age and it is important to maintain your electrical systems properly to safeguard households, tenants, members of staff, premises and possessions. By carrying out testing and inspection at regular intervals, we can determine a property or businesses electrical safety, and potential issues can be identified and dealt with, so problems don’t continue undetected which may eventually result in fire or injury.

What is fixed wire testing?

Fixed wire testing is known by many names, you may have heard it referred to as any of the below:

  • Electrical Installation Condition Reporting
  • EICR
  • Periodic Inspection and Testing
  • Fixed Wire Testing
  • Hard Wire Testing
  • Test & Inspection
  • Fixed Testing
  • Periodic Testing
  • Electrical Testing

Fixed wire testing involves the testing of the electrical services and/or systems in a building. It covers all the wiring in a building, whether this is a home or business; domestic, commercial or indsutrial property and it also covers anything wired into the cabling such as main panels, distribution board, lighting, sockets, air conditioning and other fixed items.

What’s involved in a fixed wire test?

Fixed wire testing involves in depth visual inspections and electrical tests on all systems in your home or premises . Each circuit will be inspected for any visible damage or signs of aging or wear and tear. Then the electrician will perform a series of tests to ensure that the wiring is safe and correctly wired.

There may be a small amount of disruption while testing is being carried out as we are required to switch off the electricity to your consumer unit at some point during the test, however we try and keep this as minimal as possible.

How often do I need a fixed wire test?

The below list shows the recommended intervals between periodic tests and inspections according to BS7671 Electrical Regulations:

  • Domestic premises (general) = 10 years/Change of Occupancy
  • Domestic premises (rented houses and flats) = 5 years/Change of Occupancy
  • Residential accommodation (HMO, halls of residence, nurses accommodation etc) = 5 years/Change of Occupancy (some local authorities ask for HMO properties to be tested every 3 years)
  • Commercial premises = 5 years/Change of Occupancy
  • Educational establishments = 5 years
  • Industrial premises = 3 years
  • Offices = 5 years
  • Shops = 5 years
  • Laboratories = 5 years
  • Hospitals and medical clinics (general areas) = 5 years
  • Hospitals and medical clinics (medical locations) = 1 year
  • Cinemas = 1-3 years (local authorities license should stipulate frequency)
  • Churches = 5 years
  • Leisure complexes (excluding swimming pools) = 3 years
  • Places of public entertainment = 3 years
  • Restaurants and hotels = 5 years
  • Theatres, etc. = 3 years
  • Public Houses = 5 years
  • Village halls/community centres = 5 years
  • Agricultural and horticultural = 3 years
  • Caravans = 3 years but should be reduced to every 1 year if used frequently.
  • Caravan parks = 1 year
  • Highway power supplies = 6-8 years
  • Marinas = 1 year
  • Fish farms = 1 year
  • Swimming pools = 1 year
  • Emergency lighting = 3 years – although luminaries should be discharge tested every 1 year
  • Fire alarms = 1 year
  • Launderettes = 1 year
  • Petrol filling stations = 1 year
  • Construction site installations = 3 months
  • Temporary installation = 3 months

Paces

Get A Quote

Happy New Year everyone! I know we’re a bit late but I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.

One of the jobs we finished before Christmas was at Paces and it was a conversion of part of the campus to a respite centre, Blossom View. We were responsible for the full scope of electrics in the conversion, the property needed a full rewire, installation of a fire alarm system, lighting design and installation, and CCTV. We also installed a nurse call system with call points in each of the bedrooms and the main communal areas as well. We also did an installation test once the work was completed.

Thank you very much to our friends at Glebe Construction for taking us on board for this job, and for the photos!
